A rooftop or ground mount plant has three distinct earthing requirements: equipment earthing for inverters and combiner boxes, bonding of every module frame and structure section, and a lightning protection earth. These are often quoted as one line item on a project BOQ, and the shortfall shows up during commissioning. Budget them separately.
Every module frame and every structure section has to be electrically continuous back to earth. Anodised aluminium frames do not reliably conduct through their clamping surfaces, which is why grounding clips that bite through the anodising exist. Skipping them leaves sections of the array floating, which is both a shock risk and a fault-detection problem.
Rooftop structures spend twenty years in the weather. Hot dip galvanising bonds zinc through the whole surface including cut edges and welds. Pre-galvanised sheet that is cut and drilled after coating leaves bare steel at exactly the points where water collects — the fixing holes. Structures usually fail at the fasteners and edges first, which is why the coating method matters more than the coating thickness quoted on the datasheet.
Tilt angle depends on latitude and whether the priority is annual yield or winter output. Post spacing and section size depend on wind load, which depends on location and building height. Ballasted versus penetrating foundations depends on the roof. A structure quoted without a site drawing is a guess, and the cost of getting it wrong is a warranty claim on the roof rather than on the structure.
Arrays are large, flat, exposed and connected to expensive electronics. They need an air termination designed against the array footprint, a down conductor route that does not run alongside DC cabling, and surge protection on both DC and AC sides. Running the down conductor next to string cables is a common installation error that induces surges into exactly what you were protecting.
The practical reason to source both together is specification consistency. When the structure supplier, the earthing supplier and the bonding hardware supplier are three different companies, the gaps appear at the interfaces — wrong clip for the rail section, earthing conductor sized for a different fault current, structure with no designated bonding point. One BOQ from one manufacturer removes that class of problem.
It depends on plant capacity, layout and soil resistivity. As a rough guide, a small rooftop plant may need two to four pits, while ground mount plants need a designed earth grid rather than a pit count.
